The best singer you never heard of

“Yvonne Elliman began her singing career in London in 1969 and while an unknown was discovered by Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber. They asked her to sing the part of Mary Magdalene on their original concept album for “Jesus Christ Superstar”. After the album’s 1970 release she was part of the traveling cast for four years, appearing on the London stage, the original Broadway production, and in the Movie version. Had a Billboard Hot 100 Hit Single in 1971 with the song “I Don’t Know How to Love Him” from the album. One of only two people to appear on the original album, in the stage versions, and the movie, her performance as Mary Magdalene brought her a 1974 Golden Globe nomination for Best Actress in a Motion Picture Comedy or Musical. She sang backup for Eric Clapton, simultaneously with her own career, from 1974 to 1979. Part Japanese, Chinese and Irish.” – IMDB

Interesting singer at an interesting time. Just reading that bit above on how she was “discovered” as an 18 year old. How does a kid from Hawaii end up singing in London only to be discovered by the producers of one of the biggest plays/movies of the 70s?? Just bizarre. If you’ve never seen Jesus Christ Superstar I highly recommend it. It is out of this world for some of the dance and musical numbers. There is a group dance scene in front of these columns that is one for the ages (and I’m no even a particularly big dance fan). Its incredible what they did back then before they knew they couldn’t do it. Much like Godspell, only on a more spectacular level. She was just exceptional in the role of Mary Magdalene. Then to read she sang backup in the 70s for Eric Clapton was unbelievable.

The song in the video I posted “Hello Stranger”, is one of those like with Ray Coniff singers where I first discovered the voice as an “instrument”. The melodic nature of her voice is hypnotizing. [shoo bop, shoo bop my baby!]

Guess what brick & mortar? Online shopping is quite easy

Coaster Contemporary Grey Adjustable Bar Stool
Swivel/padded bar stool!

Yeah so its Monday and I need a padded bar stool with a back (the armrests were a bonus) for many hours at a hobby bench. The hard seat of a wooden stool with no back just wasn’t cutting it (I can’t believe how many years I put up with it). There’s a snotty little charity thrift shop called Overflow Thrift just up the street so I go up there. “Closed on Mondays”. So I look up the number for the Gilbert Consignment Shop; “Closed on Mondays”. So I came home, went to Walmart.com, found this beauty that’s just perfect (padded/swivel/adjustable/with armrests) for $120. The only downside is it won’t be here for a week. I guess I can wait a week rather than drive all over creation and settling for something that isn’t quite what I wanted!

[9/7/21 update: Online can’t get it here either. How do you operate in a mail order business for years and be so incompetent at the art of shipping? It was supposed to be here today, Tuesday. 5 pm comes so I check online to see where its at; “delayed“. Now its set for Thursday 9/9. The Fed Ex facility in Grimes, Iowa let me down. They’re holding it hostage. I haven’t received a ransom note yet. See that’s the part that kills be, there weren’t any delays in taking my money, boom! They did that first day. No the delay is why it took the warehouse 3 days to give it to the Fed Ex man? And secondly, why did it sit in Grimes for 3 days?]

Gun Show! Gun Show! Gun Show!

Days After Parkland, It's Business as Usual at a Florida Gun Show - Bloomberg
(typical gun show, not the actual world famous Boone Gun Show)

Boone-o’clock at the Fairgrounds! (“You’ll shoot your eye out kid!”) The most sought after item? More rare than even printer ink? Pistol primers! Can you use too many exclamation points in one paragraph? I don’t think so! Then you have the gun show equivalent of a loaf of bread, 115 gr FMJ 9mm, what will its price be? Ammo Seek has it at .33 cents a round, which works out to $16.50 a box. But as there is a godawful amount of shipping charge tacked onto that ($20), say 5 boxes ($82.50), it then makes it $102.50, or $20.50 a box. I bet the gun show people will be trying for $30.

Pistol primers? As elusive as Elvis, Bigfoot and the Loch Ness Monster? (spellcheck doesn’t recognize “Loch Ness”) I bet they don’t even have any! I’ll update tonight. Mainly the sellers are old farts who just like to take around the same hunks a junk forever, just loading and unloading from one show to the next. Swear to God they don’t seem all that interested in whether they sell stuff or not. Besides, most “gun shows” for the last 18 months have been selling mostly jerky and jelly!

[8/27 6:30 pm update: Oh my gawd the criminal class never changes! Gypsies, tramps and thieves. 1 guy had primers, $125 per 1,000. Mail order (if they had them) have them priced averaging $80 bucks a box. As I drove over there I said to myself “I’ll pay $100”. But gun runners always have to squeeze a little bit more. .45 Colt on the box said $40.21, that’s fair. When I handed him 2 boxes he went to his computer and said “$86.00”. Well you keep them buddy. 9 mm was around $23. One guy had 100 rounds of Winchester white box for $56. Dude, I can get 100 rounds for $44.]

Little Miss Sunshine

Shirley Temple and Bill Robinson

Little Miss Sunshine

By

Dawn Pisturino

Today, when film buffs pay homage to Hollywood in the 1930s, they gush over glamor stars like Bette Davis, Carole Lombard, and Jean Harlow. But the big superstar from 1934-1938 was a precocious little girl with golden ringlets named Shirley Temple.

Born April 23, 1928 in Santa Monica, California, Temple went on to appear in 29 films between the ages of 3 and 10. But as her childhood waned, so did her shining star, and she retired from films in 1950 at the age of 22.

The Great Depression was in full swing in the mid-1930s, and the federal government had asked powerful studio moguls in Hollywood to embark on a mission of “cheering Americans up.” Shirley Temple, managed by her practical and astute parents, fit that role to a tee.

She was a natural born actress who played the role of the little savior in low-budget comedies and melodramas that pitted rich against poor and hard-hearted, miserly crooks against loving, generous saints. She often played the role of an orphan, which accurately reflected the plight of so many of America’s children at that time.

Popular actors like Gary Cooper, John Boles, James Dunn, Victor McLaglen, Randolph Scott, and John Barrymore played opposite the feisty little girl. She charmed them with upbeat childhood ditties like “Animal Crackers in My Soup,” “On the Good Ship Lollipop,” “You Gotta Eat Your Spinach, Baby,” and others. These songs became classic childhood fare for later generations.

But her most memorable performances occur with vaudeville dancer Bill “Bojangles” Robinson in films such as “The Little Colonel,” where he teaches her the staircase dance. Under his guidance, Temple became an accomplished tap dancer.

Popular culture embraced the dynamic childhood star with nationwide sales of dolls, toys, clothing, and other items bearing the Shirley Temple image and name. Temple became a wealthy young lady, thanks to the financial management of her parents.

By the time of her death on February 10, 2014, Temple had enjoyed an extensive career as a child entertainer, radio host, TV producer, and a U.S. Ambassador. But she will always be remembered as the darling little girl with the golden ringlets who laughed and cried and sang and danced her way into people’s hearts.

Where did all the music go?

Justin Hayward of the Moody Blues (he’s just a singer in a rock & roll band)

And why did so much of it come from England? I mean the English don’t get anything else right (food, basketball, war fighting), why music? Okay they do pretty good with movies and tennis, but they ruled the world with their music. I think I just answered my own question: “Where did all the music go?” I kept looking at America, when it was really the collapse of English society that made music disappear.

Hell, they don’t even call themselves ‘England’ anymore. What’s up with that? Now they’re “Brits”. I think their society collapsed when they kicked Winston Churchill to the curb. They were some alright blokes up until then. And when I talk about their musical dominance I’m not even talking about the Beatles or the Rolling Stones. I just found another one last night, the Dave Clark 5.

Its kind of like the Jewish control of Hollywood, I didn’t realize the extent of it for years. In this case (I might get one wrong) The Fortunes, Yes, The Who, Elo, Black Sabbath, Queen, The Kinks, The Clash, Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, Sex Pistols, Def Leppard, Judas Priest, Deep Purple, Iron Maiden, Genesis, The Kinks, Elton John, Cream, Bad Company, Derek and the Dominos, Ten Years After, Status Quo, Cliff Richards, Chris Rea, Badfinger, Polly Browne & Pickettywitch …

Then you get into Canadian groups, what the hell’s that about?? Rush, Guess Who, BTO? William Shatner, well, he’s like a group, and he did have an album. I always wondered what happened to “American” music, and a large part of it was never American to begin with! I thought Fleetwood Mac was at least American, but its part British too! And completely ridiculous!

I have said forever (only half jokingly) that music died in 1976 with Foghat’s ‘Slow Ride‘. That’s not too far from the truth. I finally had to do a post on it when last night I stumbled upon the above video, ‘I’m Just a Singer in a Rock & Roll Band!’. Watch that video, its genius on so many levels, and the drummer’s an animal. Thanks to the comment section I found out the genesis for that song was the god-like importance they were being given by their fans (life was a little weird in the late 60’s and 70’s).

But until this morning, I thought the collapse was solely American, and now I see music disappeared from the entire globe. Why is that? Is it just me? I’m sorry but I look back to that era, and I see giants: Three Dog Night, Doobie Brothers, CCR, Eagles, Supremes, Shirelles, Earth Wind & Fire, Fifth Dimension, America, Chicago, Blood Sweat & Tears, The Ronettes, The Chiffons, The Four Seasons, The Doors, Jefferson Airplane, The Temptations, Seals and Crofts, The Carpenters, Dan Fogelberg, Rare Earth. I don’t see anyone like that today. All I see are Munchkins! Damn little hairy Munchkins! No giants, none! Zero, zip, nadda.

Anyway, I don’t know where it went, I just know its gone.

Super Furry Animals (there’s been some misses too)

[I didn’t even really get into the solo artists, Elvis, Billy Joel, B.J. Thomas, John Mellencamp, Bruce Springsteen, Chubby Checker, Fats Domino, Buddy Holly, Chuck Berry, James Brown, Little Richard, Stevie Wonder, Ray Charles, Marvin Gaye, Peter Frampton, Gilbert O’Sullivan, Mama Cass, Otis Redding, Joe Cocker, Janis Joplin, Linda Ronstadt, Judy Collins, Dick Dale, Todd Rundgren, Willie Nelson, Jerry Lee Lewis, Johnny Cash. And I forgot a ton of groups, Van Halen, ZZ Top, Beach Boys, Jay and the Americans, The Lettermen, The Osmonds, Alan Parsons Project, Bellamy Brothers, Poison, Snake (white snake?), Raspberries, Spiral Staircase, The Hollies, Righteous Brothers, Ike & Tina Turner, Santana, Smokey Robinson & the Miracles, Hamilton Joe Frank and Reynolds, Bay City Rollers, KC & the Sunshine Band, Bee Gees, Danny and the Juniors and on and on and on. I even see it in the comment section on YouTube, twenty something’s saying, “Man, I wish I grew up in that era.” I don’t think its just me. It just occurred to me that back then your “entertainment” (outside of friends and sports activities) was movies, music on the radio, 3 channels on the television, books, magazines and church. Now you have the entire world of the internet. Another indicator of the time was Woodstock (‘music in the mud’), that could never happen today. Not no way, not no how.]

[Just saw this in YouTube comments: “Whenever I hear songs like Whiter Shade of Pale I am struck by how awful today’s music really is. The current crop of performers (not really singer’s, are they?) could never write songs of this calibre, let alone an entire album containing such greatness. So glad I was an 80’s/90’s teen, the last great era of modern music.”]

Lydia Cornell

Lydia Cornell (Korniloff) – best known for ‘Too Close for Comfort’

IMDB says she is: “One of TV’s most popular sex symbols (understatement), she is now a writer, director, mother, comedienne, talk show host, women and children’s advocate, teen mentor and inspirational public speaker. Sober since September 11, 1994, she is an addiction and recovery expert and podcast host (Godshots).”

As is typical of blonde bombshells, is a very nice and thoughtful person. People like me used to be unable to look past the character they played. She came to mind about 5 years ago when I was on Twitter and found out she was also a conservative columnist. In the vein of Bo Derek, another surprise.

All I know was a channel was rerunning episodes of ‘Comfort’ last year, and I found myself unable to turn away from this goofy show, Lydia was simply that captivating. I actually knew a ‘Lydia’ like her in real life. Spitting image. Had the pleasure of photographing her. She was so nice too. They can be so kind to nerds.

Man she photographs well in B&W. A lot of times its because they have the eyes or the bone structure to support the intense focus it forces on their features.

Found her wonderful high school graduation photo at a FOX News article about her and her career. Look at that luscious red hair!

Carli Lloyd stood

US Women’s Soccer Team member Carli Lloyd

Something that will drive me crazy (and its a short drive) is when conservative media goes out of their way to create a boogeyman on the Left. Someone to get the troops fired up about and clicking on their articles. Which is easier I suppose than committing journalism. Everybody knows the name and face of that purple-haired America hating bitch who likes to piss on the flag.

But over the weekend while every member of her team was kneeling, Carli Lloyd stood. I don’t know the whole story, I don’t know that she’s Mother Theresa, but I know she stood. I know she should be celebrated. I know it should be checked out what gave her guts. I know she’s right in a world that’s gone wrong. Thanks Carli.

I love that nose of hers, it makes her face. She’s a strong woman in a good way.

The one thing YouTube is good at

Vitas vs Mac (US Open 1979)

The hair! The shorts! Wood rackets! Gerulaitus even did the old school thing of holding both balls in the hand while serving. Vitas was clearly the better dresser and had the better hair stylist. McEnroe always looked like he shopped at the Salvation Army and used a weed whacker to do his hair. Its eternally interesting to me that McEnroe played through the transition from serve/volley with wood rackets to today’s baseline game with graphite composite rackets with large heads. A huge change. The game was so different.

And that’s the one thing YouTube is good at: historical videos. Whether its sporting events, driving videos of California in the 40’s & 50’s, or early film from the 1900’s of NYC, its all there. And things you didn’t even know you wanted to see! Its one thing to read the description of history from the words of a talented writer, its quite another to watch it take place.

[As a side note I thought it was just modern crowds that were loud, obnoxious and disruptive. Au contraire, this crowd from over 40 years ago was quite obnoxious.]

Tennis Twist Ball Machine ($299)

Very interesting machine. Its not powerful or anything, it just tosses the ball out there for you to practice your forehand and backhand. But seeing its at 1/4th the cost of the next option, what the heck. [9/5/21 update: I bought it and have had it out like 3 times now. I’ve been improving noticeably in just that amount of time. If it lasts a year I imagine it will have helped my backhand and forehand tremendously. Its like a number of sports, you really need the “reps” to perfect your game. And that’s what this is, 28 reps a load. One of the quirks about it is each of the 28 balls you put in has a different bounce it seems like. Really its probably 3 different bounces: Dead, kind of dead and lively! So you have to be ready to use good footwork to adjust for that, or open up 9 new cans of balls.]
