I set fire to my Bible on the playing fields of my Cambridge boarding school one bright, windy spring afternoon in 1967. I was 15 years old. The book did not, as I had hoped, blaze fiercely and swiftly.
Only after much blowing and encouragement did I manage to get it to ignite at all, and I was left with a disagreeable, half-charred mess.
Most of my small invited audience drifted away long before I had finished, disappointed by the anticlimax and the pettiness of the thing. Thunder did not mutter.
It would be many years before I would feel a slight shiver of unease about my act of desecration. Did I then have any idea of the forces I was trifling with?

So true, so true
“When people are focused on a higher power, it’s a threat to the people who want power.”
Think about that. It does explain societies like the Soviet Union, Communist China and North Korea. On the other hand, Islamic culture, which has a fusion of church and state, utilizes that religious fervor for it’s own purposes. I heard the above quote on Catholic radio, they were applying it to American culture.
What is life in Iowa?
Is it living in the city? Small towns? The countryside? Yes. Although each experience is different, there is a bond. What makes one life different from another? What about locations? Is growing up in Belmond even comparable to growing up in Bettendorf?
The demographics have changed radically in the last 50 years. So have the jobs. The standard of living. The tabs at the top of the page capture the categories of life. The About page tells the mission of Iowa life.
