The Biggest Bundle of Them All!

Vittorio De Sica, Edward G. Robinson, Robert Wagner, Racquel Welch (1968)

Silliness! Silliness! I love it! Filmed on location in Naples, Italy. Beautiful, beautiful. You could turn the sound off and watch this. Every shot is just gorgeous. And that’s not even the ones with Racquel in them. 1968 Racquel, she was in her prime. 28 years old. Robert Wagner was in his at 38-yrs-old. That’s what a lot of this was, just beautiful people in a beautiful location. Which is fine. 1968 Hollywood could do that.

Think ‘Ocean’s 11‘, ‘The Thomas Crown Affair‘, ‘The Great Train Robbery‘. The “caper” movie, the “heist” movie. They were hugely popular with Hollywood for awhile. It hit me a couple of week’s ago watching The Thomas Crown Affair that they liked to put a pretty face on stealing, and call it something other than what it is. Wonder why that is? They are determined to make theft seem glamorous and exciting.

In the restaurant scene playing right now, everything about it is just wonderful. The giant aquarium, the design of the restaurant, the enormous sculptures, the art pieces on the wall, even just the wonderful Italian tables and chairs. I guess what I’m trying to say is they did it better half a century ago even when they were just sleepwalking, Down below I’ll put a user review from IMDB. He sums it up pretty well (even if a little harsh). I just look at it as a fun little TCM movie on a weekday morning!

Racquel Welch (yeah I just said that for fun)

Even Raquel can’t save this one

I’ve got as much testosterone as the next bloke, and Raquel Welch at her finest is certainly worth a look; but the fact is that a cardboard cut-out could act better, and an hour and half of Ms. W showing off her credentials does not a movie make.

Considering the cast, it’s surprising that it’s as bad as it is. I’ve never been a big fan of Wagner, and his tough guy Harry is about as convincing as a 9-dollar bill. Godfrey Cambridge and Vittorio de Sica, both of whom I usually enjoy, seem to be sleeping through their lines; and as for Edward G…well, I can only assume he was there for the paycheck.

This film is a mess: from non-existent plot, through stop-start action and unfunny script to puerile slapstick and annoying 60’s ‘caper’ music. If it weren’t for Miss Welch, I’d have given it a 0.

That said, she is a treat to the eyes – even better than her delicious cameo in ‘Bedazzled’ – and for that reason alone I gave it a 3.

Even a secondary player like Godfrey Cambridge is just a delight to watch!

Did you ever see ‘It’s A Mad Mad Mad Mad World’? Kind of like that. Yesterday on TCM was Racquel Welch day. As I’m sure you know ’68 was a really big year for her. From 1964 – 1969 she made 25 movies. It was 3, 4 or 5 a year. Jimmy Stewart even stepped up with one that year called ‘Bandolero!’ with her. TCM played another with Burt Reynolds called ‘Fuzz’. She was the hottest property around. Robert Wagner said in his biography she was late every day by at least 2 hours to the set.
