I like milk. Therefore I know what the price of a gallon of milk was when I shopped at Hy-Vee and Fareway: $4.49. Guess what I’m paying at the Target? Yeah, $2.29. I save over two dollars a gallon. Boom! Off the top. Big box of Rice Chex: $2.50. A tub of Kraft Philly Cream Cheese: $3.49. Body Armor 12 oz.: $1.39. Nutri Grain Bars: $2.69. Everyone of those prices better than Hy-Vee and Fareway. Progresso Soup: $1.59. That’s what I’m talking.

Culver’s ice cream
Okay so its “frozen custard”. They make the best ice cream in Ames, but about half the time I forget that. Trying to get ice cream in Ames can be trying. You think of a place like Dairy Queen that specializes in it. Nope. Van Gorp’s owns the DQs in Ames and like so many others they think they’ll maximize profit by employing minimum wage teenagers. You get what you pay for. I know at the Boone DQ they had a walkout when the employees found out the McDonalds next-door was paying $5 bucks an hour more than the highest paid DQ employee! Which is what the Van Gorp’s are doing and it shows. The North one couldn’t make a malt to save their lives. The chocolate is virtually indistinguishable from the vanilla its so pale. They’re slow and after all the wait its a puny cone you get.
Ditto for the Lincoln Way DQ. I watched the kid after he spent 5 minutes unwrapping coins for the register, correcting an already served order, unwrap cones to load the dispenser, and grab mine by the lip with his bare fingers! So I went half a block to the Casey’s and get a dish of ice cream. Of course their machine was broken for the gazillionth time. Casey’s ice cream machines are always broke and their gas pumps most of the time don’t have any paper in the receipt printer. I forgot Culver’s! Its right there too on Lincoln Way! Its the creamiest and chocolatiest! Its the best in town, and I forgot it! I always associate Culvers with their burgers, especially their mushroom and swiss. Old people, we take our ice cream seriously.
When business owners try to do it on the cheap with cut-rate employees, they’re telling you they don’t think much about their product and they don’t think much about you.
Grounds for Celebration
The prune
People are so gullible. “Conventional wisdom” has everyone convinced that prunes taste bad and will make you mess your pants. Both are wrong. Prunes are great tasting and good for you.
Sun Warrior website says that “prunes are high in insoluble fiber, an essential part of good elimination and in helping to prevent constipation. Because insoluble fiber isn’t absorbed by the body, it stays in the digestive tract, and because the digestive tract is very absorbent, the fiber soaks up large amounts of water which make the stools bigger and easier to pass. The insoluble fiber in prunes is also food for the good bacteria in the intestines, and when the good bacteria eat or use this insoluble fiber, they make butyric acid, a short-chain fatty acid that is the main fuel for the cells in the intestines to maintain a healthy colon tract.”
They say that prunes also are high in soluble fiber that helps in lowering cholesterol. Prunes also contain high amounts of a natural sugar called sorbitol and dihydroxyphenyl isatin which stimulates the intestines to aid in digestion. Prunes are also high in antioxidants, beta-carotene, and potassium which helps keep a healthy blood pressure level.
It is ridiculous what Hollywood and pop culture have done to make people believe that if they look crosswise at a bag of prunes they will suffer explosive bowel syndrome. Nothing is further from the truth. It is a wonderful fruit that also cures baldness. Just kidding.
